READ IN Week

Join us for READ IN Week from October 7-11, as we celebrate literacy and the joy of reading! This year’s theme is “Reading is for everyone!” - whether it's books, recipes, instructions, or the news, reading comes in many forms and is for all ages. Let’s inspire a love of reading across our community and show that reading is truly for everyone.

Tutor Appreciation Day

Tutor Appreciation Day (TAD) is approaching on Friday, October 25th! First introduced in 2022, this event was created to recognize the dedicated efforts of volunteers in our Adult Tutor Program. Last year, TAD became an official event, thanks to a proclamation from the City of Edmonton.

As we celebrate the third annual TAD this year, we honour the more than 2,500 hours that tutors have devoted to supporting learners in reading, writing, math, and digital skills over the past year. We are deeply grateful for the time and commitment they have put into offering such a valuable gift.

If you know any volunteer tutors, be sure to show your appreciation for their incredible work on the 25th! Below, we are sharing a heartfelt story from one of the learners:

"My tutor assisted me greatly in my studies and personal life skills to prepare me as a community services worker. I began assisting in the communities at my work because of him. I am so happy I met my tutor with the Centre for Family Literacy; they changed my life.

As a newcomer I came to Canada with a big dream, and [my tutor] has been the best tutor ever ... driving me to my goal and to be a better person and to speak English with confidence, and because of him, I am doing well at work, assisting newcomers in need and advising them with everything I know.

I will never forget the support from my tutor. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank him.”

Event Updates

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our two major fundraising events this year! Thanks to your generosity, we raised nearly $209,000 at Wine & Words and just over $41,000 at the Links fore Literacy Charity Golf Tournament. Your contributions make a real difference in supporting literacy programs in our community!

Defining Family Literacy for Canada - We Want Your Feedback

The Centre for Family Literacy is a founding member of the National Family Literacy Coalition, a group of family literacy organizations and individuals from across Canada working together to create a definition for family literacy in Canada.

We would appreciate it if you could complete the short survey linked below and pass it on to your networks. We are looking for input from as many different people and organizations across Canada as possible to help us create a definition that:

represents the work being done and the people involved in family literacy
is easy to understand and explain to people who may not know anything about family literacy
