Fall Programs Starting Soon!
What's new for CFL this fall in programs? We are bringing back in-person programming with more options!

We are so excited that we are offering ALL of our Family programs with either option, online or in person. We are excited to bring back Intergenerational Rhymes that Bind with Touchmark at Wedgewood. We have been successfully running this program for almost 20 years at this location.

We are expanding our intergenerational programming with two more sites and programs. Intergenerational COW Corner will be running at Shepherd’s Care, Southside Manor and Intergenerational Do-Re-Mi, ABC will be running at Canterbury Foundation. Bringing generations together to have fun with literacy is one of the best ways to learn!

International Literacy Day
Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world.

Since 1967, we celebrate International Literacy Day (ILD) each year worldwide to emphasize literacy's role in human dignity, rights, and building a more literate and sustainable society. We encourage you to embrace this ILD as a chance to celebrate literacy and reflect on how we can support individuals and families in reaching their literacy goals.

Looking Back on Literacy in the Park
and Poetry & Potluck in the Park
Thank you to everyone who came out and made our annual Literacy in the Park Day so much fun! We loved seeing all of your happy faces! A special thanks to our volunteers and partners who came out and helped with the fun.

We were able to give away over 200 new books to all who attended. The Centre also helped families build their home libraries by giving away almost 1000 gently used books!

We had so much fun sharing food with you and creating our very own collective poem at our first Poetry & Potluck in the Park! A huge shout out to those who came out and made this a success.

We look forward to seeing you again next summer! 🧡

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Every year, September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This day honours the children who never came back from residential schools, the survivors of these schools, and the families and communities affected by them. Public acknowledgment of the sorrowful history and enduring consequences of residential schools plays a crucial role in the journey towards reconciliation.

"Our team continues to build knowledge about Indigenous ways of being and learning to help us create safe and respectful spaces. We are grateful for the teachings we have received from elders and knowledge keepers in the learning opportunities we have attended. We are choosing materials that are more representative of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people, partnering with Indigenous serving organizations, and creating and holding space for our program participants to have conversations about this important topic. The Centre is committed to Truth and Reconciliation, not just on this one day of the year, but every day.''

Read In Week 2023

This initiative began in 1990, when UNESCO declared The Year of Literacy. Led by Esther Starkman, Edmonton representatives aimed to promote literacy's importance and instilling a lasting love for reading in children.

The theme in 2023 is Read In Reimagined! Reading isn’t just about story books. Reading stories is not only for children. Adults read everyday too. What does reading look like to you? Following instructions? Reading a recipe? Enjoying a graphic novel or comic book? Reading the news? Looking at the weather forecast? Researching for knowledge? Reading for pleasure?

Read In Week is the first week in October. As this year's host, the CFL is recognizing the importance of this week with a special kick off. We love reading and sharing stories. We love seeing families come together to support each other in their literacy goals. Join us outdoors for a story walk through the park! Sunday, October 1, 1:00 - 3:00 PM.
