This fall we’re thrilled to continue with our in-person and online programming with even more options! We’re especially excited to introduce Story Sprouts, our brand-new family program, which will include storytime, book reading, singing songs, and loads of fun. Plus, our beloved free book lending continues - no fees, no fuss, just pure joy!

International Literacy Day 2024

International Literacy Day (ILD) has been celebrated globally since 1967 to emphasize literacy as a fundamental human right and a key to achieving a more sustainable and just society.

This year’s ILD theme, “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace,” highlights the role of literacy in fostering social cohesion. A multilingual approach to education can enhance learning, strengthen communities, and preserve cultural heritage.

Join us for an ILD event hosted by ECALA with The Edmonton Literacy Coalition and Edmonton Public Library: Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition: Building the Foundation for Sustainable and Peaceful Societies. It will be held on Friday, Sept 6th, 2024, from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm at Edmonton Public Library, Stanley Milner. We hope to see you there!

A Glimpse Back at Literacy in the Park

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 4th Annual Literacy in the Park event. We loved seeing so many happy faces!

We were thrilled to have the incredible support of our partners from Jasper Place Family Resource Centre and Edmonton Public Library; their presence made the day even more special.

Additionally, we were joined by a special guest author Cheryl Fountain, who captivated us all with a reading of her newly released book "Sock Soup 2", and then got creative with sock puppets alongside our families.

And let’s not forget the amazing Bethany from Young Alberta Book Society, who brought stories to life with a fun and lively oral storytelling session.

We can't wait to see you next year!

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

September 30th marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation; a day to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities. This federal holiday serves as a vital reminder of the tragic history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, playing a key role in the reconciliation process.

On this day, we also observe Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led initiative symbolizing the lasting effects of residential schools and the message that "Every Child Matters."

We encourage all Canadians to wear orange, explore the rich and diverse cultures, read about and listen to the stories of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people.
